Eat your way to a healthy body

A large number of people across the globe believe that the goal of eating healthy food is primarily to stay healthy physically, a tenet that is held high for exercise also. While there's no denying this fact, what's of pressing importance is that unless the mind is also fed its share of nutritious food; it's quite possible that gradually you may have to bid goodbye to your physical health as well.

The mind is the pivot of all activities you undertake and this in itself should be a compelling reason to convince that the upkeep of mental health cannot be neglected at any cost. For this reason, the ancient Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad-Gita recognizes the position of the mind as being higher and loftier among other senses of the body. It further delineates and categorizes foods based on their impact on the mind, which goes as: Food in the mode of Goodness, Food in the mode of Passion and Food in the mode of Ignorance. This goes to prove that all types of food have certain innate characteristic that have the potential to influence our mind. From this we can understand why the quote, "We are what we eat" holds such weight.

This brings us to the point of discussing - what should be our diet for a healthy mind?

Evidence shows that, in the UK, almost two thirds of those who do not report mental health issues consume fruits, fruit juices and vegetable salad on a daily basis, as compared to the rest of the people who munch on unhealthy foods such as chocolates, chips and ready meals.

What are the factors that affect the health of your mind?

  1. Do not skip regular meals. Skipping meals, specifically breakfast, can lower the blood sugar level of the body, which leads to sulkiness and fatigue.
  2. Include cereals, fruits and vegetables. Wholegrain cereals, fruits, legumes, vegetables and pulses are nutritious as they contain B1 vitamin, zinc and folate, and are known to lift the mood of people suffering from depression. Also, avoid sugary foods as they are loaded with calories, but little nutrients.
  3. Fruits, especially avocados and blueberries are known to promote brain health as they improve blood flow.
  4. Keep yourself hydrated. On an average, we lose approximately 2.5 litres of water daily in the form of perspiration and urine, and to fill this loss you should drink lots of water. As even mild dehydration can cause behavioral fluctuation.

It's the responsibility of each and every one of us to maintain the soundness of our mental health at all times - after all, we just want to see ourselves happy.
